SOUTHWEST IRELAND ARRIVAL GUIDE

Shannon or Dublin? Choose the airport that fits the golf trip.

Shannon usually means a shorter drive into County Kerry. Dublin offers more flight choice and a direct Killarney coach. The better arrival depends on whether you will drive, book a transfer or use public transport, not the airfare alone.

TRANSPORT CHECKED SEPTEMBER 18, 2026

Driving or taking the coach? That changes the answer.

For a Killarney-based trip with a rental car or arranged transfer, compare Shannon first. Without a car, Dublin’s direct Killarney coach deserves a look alongside Shannon’s connection through Limerick. Match the actual arrival time, luggage and onward journey before choosing.

THE QUICK ANSWER

Match the airport to the trip shape.

Routes and timetables change. The comparison below is checked as of September 18, 2026; re-check the operating date and service notices before booking.

CHOOSE SHANNON

Shorter drive to a Kerry base.

Shannon Airport’s 2026 guide lists Killarney at roughly two hours by road. Treat that as an indicative drive, not a landing-to-hotel promise; rental collection, traffic and breaks are extra.

CHOOSE DUBLIN

Widest flight choice.

Compare Dublin for flight choice or a car-free arrival using the direct Killarney coach. Check its departure time against your flight and leave a buffer for baggage collection.

COMPARE BOTH

Price the arrival, not just the flight.

Include golf-bag charges, rental size, coach or rail tickets, driving fatigue, and the hotel night needed to protect the first round.

Shannon vs Dublin: getting to Killarney

Bus or coach route

Bus Eireann 343 to Limerick Colbert, then Expressway 14 to Killarney bus station. One change; check the connection.

FlightLink 722 runs directly from Dublin Airport to Killarney Mission Road. No coach change.

Published journey time

343 timetable examples: 39-60 minutes to Colbert. Route 14 examples: another 2 hours 5 minutes. Separate legs; connection waiting is extra.

722 timetable: 4 scheduled hours airport to Killarney. Not four hours from landing; airport processing, waiting, traffic and the hotel transfer are extra.

Rail access

Bus to Limerick Colbert, then Irish Rail connections via Limerick Junction and Mallow. Check changes for the selected departure; no train directly from the airport.

Dublin Express 782 connects the airport with Heuston. Continue by rail to Killarney, commonly changing at Mallow. The airport transfer is a separate leg.

Golf bags

Bus Eireann allowance: one medium suitcase/equivalent, up to 15 kg and 80 x 70 x 20 cm, plus small hand luggage. Do not assume a golf case fits; confirm both legs.

FlightLink golf-bag policy: no extra golf-bag charge when it fits within the luggage allowance. Additional bags depend on space; confirm before booking.

Time basis: Shannon examples use the 343 timetable valid January 25, 2026 and the current route 14 timetable. Dublin examples include 06:00-10:00 and 09:00-13:00 on route 722. These are scheduled vehicle times, not door-to-door estimates.

Service notice checked September 18: FlightLink’s August 25 notice reports delays on some 722 journeys due to weekday bridge works in Adare. Check current FlightLink service updates before relying on the four-hour schedule.

SHANNON TO KERRY

Less road between the runway and the first round.

Shannon is a practical western gateway when you have a suitable flight and a car or arranged transfer.

  • Road: its 2026 travel guide gives roughly two hours to Killarney, excluding collection, breaks and disruption.
  • Bus: route 343 to Limerick Colbert, then route 14 to Killarney. Budget for the connection.
  • Best for: golfers whose flight and ground plan make the shorter drive worthwhile.
  • Check: seasonal flights, rental hours, vehicle capacity and arrival-day fatigue.

DUBLIN TO KERRY

More air options, then a longer move west.

Dublin can work well for flight choice or a car-free journey to Killarney.

  • Coach: FlightLink 722 runs directly to Killarney Mission Road, with a four-hour published schedule. Check current delays.
  • Rail: transfer to Heuston first; Killarney itineraries commonly change at Mallow.
  • Rental car: allow for collection, the longer first-day drive and rest stops.
  • Best for: a better flight schedule, direct coach connection or time in Dublin and eastern Ireland.

GOLF BAGS CHANGE THE TRANSFER

A direct coach is not automatically an easy coach.

Confirm luggage acceptance and space with the operator. Four golfers can mean four travel bags plus four suitcases.

RENTAL CAR

Reserve around the real load.

Choose by cargo dimensions, transmission, driver comfort, and the actual model class. A vehicle labeled for five people may not fit four golf bags.

BUS OR COACH

Check the luggage rule and stop.

Confirm golf-bag acceptance, booking requirement, final stop, transfer margin, and how the group reaches the lodging after arrival.

RAIL

Count every handling step.

Rail can be comfortable, but getting from Dublin Airport to Heuston and moving bags through each transfer adds work.

Neither airport has a direct train to Killarney. Check airport-to-station connections and Irish Rail timetables separately; confirm every change for the travel date.

Review current terminal locations and operating providers, then confirm the exact vehicle class can carry the group and every golf bag.
